5 Homemade Bath Salts That You Can Make Yourself

Bath salts are a great addition to your relaxation regimen. They are wonderful for getting rid of dead skin and moisturizing, and reducing stress.

Bath salts soothe the mind and body and are an excellent way to pamper yourself. Bath salts are a wonderful way to combine the theraputic benefits of our all-natural bath salt with the relaxing, soothing effects of aromatherapy. A lot of people don’t realize that homemade bath salt is also very healthy for the body as well as the overall mind.

Creating your own unique bath salt recipe can be as simple as adding essential oils to bath salts, but adding dried herbs, colorants or other natural ingredients make the possibilities endless.

The heat in bath water makes these wonderful smelling homemade bath salts come in waves but you can change the essential oils within any of our homemade bath salt recipes to suit your own needs.

Lavender Bath Salts

Used 1 cup of epsom salts and half a cup of sea salt for this, adding about 8 drops of lavender. (This one was for me, and We adore lavender – it made the bathroom smell heavenly!) Adjust the fragrance, just adding one or two drops at a time until you’re happy with it. Lavender is difficult color to achieve with food coloring, but we got a pleasant lavender hue by using far more red than blue. Decorate the jar by threading lavender ribbon through the openings in an ecru doily, tie in place and make a bow. Alternatively, use a rubber band to secure the doily, then tie a ribbon over it.

Sea Salts

Sea salts are mineral-rich “all purpose” salts commonly added to bath salt blends. Next to Epsom salts, sea salts are the most inexpensive salts available. They help to draw toxins from the skin and soothe sore muscles.

Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate)

This main ingredient helps relax mind and body. Soaking in Epsom salt can help provide soothing relief from stress, sore muscles, and stiffness. Many people are deficient in magnesium, and it can be easily absorbed by the body during a warm bath. Epsom salt is widely available at grocery stores and pharmacies.

Exotic Salts

Other more exotic salts such as Hawaiian Red Sea Salts (Alaea), Black Sea Pink Salts, and Icelandic Geo-Thermal Brine Salts are also available. These salts generally are more expensive, but their coloration, texture and therapeutic properties are highly sought after.

Flowery Homemade Bath Salts

If you’re looking for a quick and easy bath time treat to really pamper and scent the skin, then look no further. Dead Sea salt is full of minerals and it’s been teamed up with two of the most fragrant essential oils that will leave your skin smelling wonderful. The elderflowers in this homemade bath salt gives it an extra special touch, but they may be substituted with a sprinkling of calendula petals, lavender buds or left out altogether if you don’t have any to hand.

Making the Bath Salt

Take supplies in appropriate amounts – 1 cup Epsom salt, 1 cup sea salt (after removing impurities), 1 – 2 teaspoons baking soda, 1 – 2 teaspoons glycerin, and 10 -12 drops of essential oils (lavender oil or eucalyptus oil). If you want to impart color to the bath salts, use a small amount of food coloring paste or skin-safe liquid colorant. Line a baking sheet with wax paper for drying the salts. Once you keep all these ready in an accessible place (preferably on a clean kitchen table), you can start with the preparation steps.

Lay a plastic sheet over the kitchen table to collect any fallen substances. In a large metal bowl, measure and add Epsom salt and sea salt. Using a medicine dropper, add essential oils drop by drop into the salt mixture. Stir in liquid colorant or food coloring. Mix the salts and the rest of the ingredients with your hands. Blend it for about 10 minutes or until the salts are evenly coated with essential oils and coloring agents.
